Emergency Evacuation

Half-Day Practical Training Courses

Under current fire safety legislation, the Responsible Person has a legal duty to ensure safe means of escape for every building occupant, including those with reduced mobility.

Owning evacuation equipment isn’t enough on its own: for it to be effective designated operators must be trained to use it competently, and that training must be refreshed regularly.

Fireteach’s Evacuation Chair Training is a practical half-day course delivered at your premises, giving staff the knowledge, confidence and hands-on competence to safely evacuate people with mobility impairments in an emergency.

The course blends essential theory with extensive practical work, and wherever possible uses your own evacuation equipment, so delegates train in the exact environment they’d experience during a real evacuation.

Courses cater for groups of up to 10, meaning every participant gets individual guidance from an experienced instructor throughout.

By the end of the course, delegates will understand their legal responsibilities around evacuating people with reduced mobility, know when an evacuation chair should – and shouldn’t – be used, and be able to carry out pre-use checks, safe deployment, passenger transfer and safe stairway descent. They’ll also understand ongoing inspection, maintenance and reporting requirements.

Operators should have good mobility and at least average upper body strength.

On successful completion, each delegate receives a certificate of competence, giving you documented assurance that your evacuation procedures are in safe, capable hands.

Certificate of Competence

What Your Team Will Learn

This course is built around real-world competence, not just certification. Delegates leave with a clear, practical skill set they can apply immediately, developed through structured learning outcomes covering both the legal framework and the physical technique required for safe evacuation.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the legal responsibilities relating to evacuating people with reduced mobility

  • Identify when an evacuation chair or evacuation sheet should be used

  • Recognise the limitations of evacuation chairs and the importance of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)

  • Carry out pre-use checks of an evacuation chair

  • Safely deploy, operate and store the evacuation chair

  • Safely transfer a passenger into and out of the evacuation chair

  • Demonstrate safe techniques for descending stairways with an evacuation chair

  • Work effectively as part of an evacuation team

  • Understand post-use inspection, maintenance requirements and reporting procedures

This combination of legal grounding and physical technique means your evacuation team isn’t just familiar with the equipment — they’re genuinely prepared to use it under pressure, working together calmly and effectively when it matters most. Every outcome is assessed hands-on, so competence is proven, not assumed. It’s training designed to hold up in a real emergency, not just tick a compliance box.

Evacuation Chairs & Sheets

Equipment Care & Inspection

Evacuation training isn’t a one-off box to tick — it’s an ongoing responsibility. Regular refresher training keeps designated operators competent and confident, ensuring your evacuation procedures stay effective as staff, equipment and premises change over time.

Evacuation sheet training is an important part of this wider provision. Alongside evacuation chairs, evacuation sheets are a vital piece of equipment for safely moving people with limited mobility, particularly in situations where a chair isn’t practical or available. Fireteach’s courses cover the safe, practical use of evacuation sheets as a core element of a complete evacuation equipment training package, ensuring your team is equipped to respond appropriately whatever the situation demands.

Alongside training, we also support the ongoing inspection and maintenance of your evacuation equipment. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), equipment provided for work must be safe for use, properly maintained, and inspected to confirm it’s correctly installed and hasn’t deteriorated over time. Our personnel follow a rigorous checklist when inspecting your evacuation equipment, giving you confidence that it will perform reliably when it’s needed most.

Together, hands-on training and professional servicing form a complete evacuation equipment programme helping you meet your legal obligations while genuinely protecting the people in your care. Get in touch with Fireteach to discuss scheduling Evacuation Equipment Training at your premises.
